ACCESS removes barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare and builds the power of Californians to demand health, justice, and dignity.

For the last 22 years, ACCESS has operated the reproductive health line for California. The majority of ACCESS’ callers want straightforward, accurate information about their pregnancy options, with the majority of callers contacting ACCESS for support with accessing abortion services. We provide support for people in California or coming to California for care.

ACCESS works to secure a future where:

• We all decide for ourselves whether, when and how to have children and have the resources to thrive in parenting the children we have.
• Our voices are clear and strong; where we trust ourselves, know our own power and use it to demand that we all have the social, political, and economic power and resources to make healthy decisions for ourselves, our families and our communities, free from stigma.
• There is an end to poverty and discrimination and we all affirm human dignity and the right to genuine self-determination.
• We all have access to the resources and options we need to make our gender, sexual, and reproductive health decisions a reality.

ACCESS has over 150 volunteers around the state that help callers by providing a ride to an appointment, a place to stay, someone to watch their children during an abortion procedure, gas money or money for meals during their trip. Last year, ACCESS also started providing abortion doula support – for anyone who wants someone beside them when they go to their abortion procedure – when a partner must stay behind to watch their children at home, a friend is covering their shift at work, or because no one in their network is supportive of their decision.

ACCESS is part of a long history of activism for reproductive health, rights, and justice, beginning with the founding in 1974 of its predecessor, the Coalition for the Medical Rights of Women. Past coalition efforts included DES exposure, IUD regulation, workplace safety, and sterilization abuse. The vision for ACCESS, founded in 1993 by clinic escorts, was not only to provide information and practical support on all aspects of reproductive health, but to build a community actively working to meet the real needs of women.
