Eastern Massachusetts Abortion Fund
HELP me REACH MY INDIVIDUAL GOAL of $4,000
It's EMA Fund Triathlon time again! And, as always, we need you to help people access the health care they need to create the lives they want.
Last year we raised over $50k at the triathlon. It took 1339 donations to reach our goal. Only 3 of those gifts were for more than $250. Over 400 of them were for less than $20. I think that really seeing those numbers in black and white is so powerful. Our average gift was $30. And our average EMA grant is around $250. So with a whole pile of gifts that were $30ish each, we were able to fund about 200 abortions.
We are a different organization than a lot of the ones who might ask you for money. I dutifully donate $15 to NPR annually, always during a matching gift drive ("If we get 1000 donations by 9 am, we will get a match from our donors of an extra $250,000!"), but i do it to assuage my guilt when i hear them talking over and over about caller support. I don't really believe that the small amount i can give makes a difference.
But with EMA, it does.
This year, for the first time, we put money into a permanent physical space, so that volunteers won't have to lug materials all over the place and store them in our dampening basements. Specifically, we are paying $25 a month for a beautiful file cabinet of our very own at a co-working collective, and we are very excited about it! But these sort of expenses mean that $5 actually makes a difference. 60 donations at that level, and we've paid our rent for the full year!
Last month, i talked to a caller who had two days to figure out how to fund her abortion. It was $650, a standard first trimester cost. It seemed pretty cut and dry: her insurance couldn't cover it; she had $250 in savings; we got her an $80 discount; we granted her $250; we strategized with her about how to raise the last $70. We talked the next day, and she had the money together. But then, the day of the procedure, her car died. She had to get there. She had no extra money. She couldn't even afford the T.
$5 could make the difference.
We increased our grant. She was able to use some of the money she had raised to pay for the T for her and her sister, who was going with her. She was able to get the abortion she needed.
We need your $5, so we can give her the $5 she needs.
Thank you all so much.
