WHY I'M BOWLING

I have been an advocate for reproductive justice for many years. I've bowled in this bowl-a-thon since I moved to Ohio, so this will be my 4th year participating. This year, however, is different.

A couple months ago, I found out I was pregnant. Despite the fact that I'm in a happy & healthy relationship, my health is in such a precarious position that carrying a pregnancy to term would be incredibly dangerous for both myself and a baby. So I decided to have an abortion. Luckily for me, my partner was completely supportive, my insurance covered most of the procedure, and we were able to cover the extra costs.

Not everyone is that fortunate, though. While I was at the clinic having my procedure done, I met another woman who was in a much more difficult position. Her partner was not supportive, she had to take unpaid time off work in order to have her procedure done, and she had to spend half of her rent money to pay for her abortion. When I suggested that she might be able to get money from Women Have Options, one of the nurses informed us that the WHO money ran out several months before because the need for funds is so great.

I could list all the stats of how most people who have abortions already have children, or are below the poverty line, or the other stats I usually give to humanize the people who have abortions. But really, those things don't matter. I don't care what someone's situation is. I don't care if they've had unprotected sex with different people every night for months. I don't care if what their reasoning is for getting an abortion (unless they're being coerced into it, which is obviously unacceptable). I believe everyone who wants an abortion should be able to have one. No qualifications, no apologies.

I don't want to guilt people who can't afford to donate into giving money. But if you are in a position where you can donate, please do. Maybe it means forgoing a special treat. But imagine being pregnant and having to decide between getting an abortion or paying rent. Imagine having two kids you're already struggling to feed when you find out you're pregnant.

A small donation can literally change someone's life. I hope you donate, or at the very least, spread the word. Thank you.
