WHY I'M BOWLING

I started volunteering on Lilith Fund's hotline in 2011. After working my first shift I knew this was an amazing organization changing Texans lives. I also knew that I wanted to GIVE OUT ALL THE MONEY to people struggling to access an abortion.

Last year Lilith Fund heard from over 3,700 Texans in need. While their stories are different, they all have one thing in common – they can’t afford to pay for their abortion.

Undue burdens Texans face while trying to access abortion care:

  • Medicaid denies coverage for abortion services. The Hyde Amendment denies abortion access to the nearly one in seven women of childbearing age insured by Medicaid

  • TRAP Laws have shuttered clinics in Texas. From May 2013 to September 2014 the abortion clinics in Texas decreased from 41 to 20

  • Texans have been forced to travel hundreds of miles to access basic, medical care. This includes crossing border checkpoints 100 miles from the border.

  • Patients are forced to undergo medically unnecessary procedures
  • 24hr waiting period and multiple, medically unnecessary appointments for care mean time off from work and the need to arrange for childcare

  • Laws force doctors to give patients medically-false information about abortion

  • Minors must gain parental consent or go through judicial bypass
  • Texas bans abortions after 20 weeks, the point in time when fetal abnormalities are identified, forcing Texans to travel out of state
  • Ambulatory Surgical Center requirements in HB2, if fully implemented, will force health centers to completely rebuild their facilities by setting requirements that have nothing to do with women’s health and safety

  • Forcing doctors to use outdated science for administering medication abortion (pills), basically eliminating the choice for clients to use medication abortion.
  • The full implementation of HB2 threatens to shutter all but 8 clinics in Texas (leaving no clinics in the Rio Grande Valley or west of San Antonio)

Because of unfair and unnecessary laws, safe and legal abortions can be out of reach of those who don't have the money to pay for them. Lilith Fund fights everyday to make access a reality in Texas. The right to choose an abortion is meaningless without access to abortion services.

The undue burdens are here! Using our balls (and friends) to knock down barriers. Join me, any amount can help lift the barriers to abortion access in Texas.

We envision a society in which equal access to abortion is guaranteed for all, regardless of economic situation.
