Lilith Fund - Austin
HELP me REACH MY INDIVIDUAL GOAL of $5,000
*************************IMPORTANT UPDATE*************************
Y'all have been so flipping fantastic donating to fund abortion care for Texans, but I'm still short of my goal, so I'm gonna sweeten the pot. With a bat.
A bat? Yes, a bat. A literal bat. The animal.
Austinites know never to touch bats. But I'm going to be brave. I'm going to be strong. I'm going to TOUCH. A. BAT.
BUT ONLY IF I MAKE MY GOAL OF RAISING $5,000 FOR THE LILITH FUND. Why am I doing this? well, read on:
Friends, it's that time of year again: time to donate whatever you can to help Texans pay for the abortion care they need!

If you follow my work, you know that Texas lawmakers have passed the most stringent anti-abortion access law in the country, and that people across the state who need abortion care are finding it harder than ever to access that care.

Texas may soon have just eight legal abortion providers available to serve a state with a population of 26 million. But even now, more than half of Texas' legal providers have shuttered because they can't afford to comply with medically unnecessary regulations. In short, that's ...

But here's what: it's not just abortion care that's under attack. Our elected lawmakers slashed family planning funding in 2011--funds that didn't even come close to serving the total need in Texas, the state with the highest rate of uninsured adults in the nation.

And already, Texas students don't get fact-based, medically sound information about sexuality and safe relationships. We're setting ourselves up for failure at every turn.

Texas lawmakers have also refused to take a Medicaid expansion that could help more than a million of our fellow Texans get health insurance. And did you know that Texas has one of the worst Medicaid thresholds all around--that a parent needs to make no more than $298 per month to qualify for the program?

Even in this self-described "pro-life" state, Texans who need pre-natal care often can't access what they need; this problem is even worse for people in Texas jails, who see worse birth outcomes than people who aren't incarcerated because our "pro-life" state cares more about license plates than helping them have healthy pregnancies.

In short: without access to a full range of reproductive health care options, "choice" is a fantasy. Here's where you come in. You listening?

Good. Because what I'm asking you to do is really, really easy: I'm asking you to donate what you can--$5, $10, $25, $100--to the Lilith Fund, a non-profit that directly helps Texans who need abortion care pay for that care. A clinical abortion can cost upwards of $500--and even more for people who have to wait longer to save up the money for their procedures. Because there are so few providers left in the state, a lot of people also have to pay for gas, bus tickets, plane tickets and hotel rooms--not to mention child care, because most people who need abortion care are already parents--and that makes the cost of their procedures even more expensive. It all adds up ... fast.

The people who need your help are some of the state's most marginalized folks--people and families of color, trans people and others who, basically, aren't straight, cisgender white women. Your money helps them when you donate to the Bowl-A-Thon. It doesn't go to a politician.

It goes straight to people who need to pay for their abortion care at a safe, legal abortion provider. Oftentimes, they just need the extra $10 or $20 to pay for their health care. You can help these people directly, when and where they need it most. That makes you a badass.

Can you give a few dollars? Can you help Texans who have been disenfranchised by a system that marginalizes them in so many ways? I think you can.

I've intentionally set my fundraising goal higher than ever this year, because I know there are so many people who want to help but who feel frustrated by the scope of the problem. Here's a way you can help, directly, without worrying whether you're donating to elect another wishy-washy mouthpiece, or that your money will be funneled to another cause. This is about funding abortions. Let's raise $5000 to fund abortions. LET ME SAY IT AGAIN: LET'S RAISE $5000 TO FUND ABORTIONS!

Did you donate yet? DID YOU? IF SO, DON'T JUST ...
